“I’ll Disconnect Your Battery”

Monday, March 3rd, 2014

It’s been said that growth has nothing to do with humor.

In the past, when bicycles were driven exclusively by muscle power, a flat tire was the only hindrance to the forward progress of an ambitious cyclist. Today, in the era of Pedelecs (bicycles with electrically-assisted pedaling), which are showing a steep rise in their growth curve, there is an additional problem: Where are the charging stations to support longer rides, even rides in the mountains? Energy producers also profit from the recent enthusiasm for (electrically-assisted) cycling. Apart from that, environmentally-friendly mobility works differently, based on the premise that not every battery recharge can be achieved with environmentally-friendly electricity. But that’s a topic worthy of another conversation.

Growth in the bicycle sector can guarantee completely-new verbal threats: A couple, man and wife, pedaling along on electrically-assisted bicycles, were engaged in a small dispute from which I, standing in the immediate vicinity, could not escape. After a short exchange of blows in their duel of words, the woman made the ultimate threat: “I’ll disconnect your battery. Then see how far you’ll get.” Understanding the situation, the husband shut up and fumed off, electrically assisted. Wife 1. Husband 0.

One thing is certain: Without this growth in the bicycle sector, I wouldn’t have had this laugh.

Things that will no longer be–part 2

Friday, December 13th, 2013

In 2013, we have already speculated here aseveral concepts that are clearly threatened with extinction. Here are a few more of them that will fall by the wayside, one by one. We might like to remind ourselves that we are well-advised to encourage purposeful innovation in our companies.

    Incandescent bulb
    Long-playing record
    Hard drive
    LCD monitor
    Mobile telephone
    Go online

Can you think of other such concepts? Write them as a comment to this blog post.
